Vintage '50s beach editorial vs. Lover the Label swimsuit. Comparing swimsuits was so easy, especially when vintage designs are really popular right now.
A 1950's dress pattern vs. Aya's pretty frock. Similar full skirted design and belted waist.

I guess you could come to the conclusion that fashion has changed a lot over the decades, but the core classics have remained the same (with slight variations). Full skirted sun/dresses, high waist bikinis, vintage prints, classic Hollywood ball gowns and simple yet daring makeup and hair haven't really gone astray. Most of the time they have just been temporarily replaced (ahem, cue the Twiggy era).
One of my favourite past-times is collecting similar outfits and comparing them between the years difference. I've discovered that it isn't very hard at all to find dresses, hair styles and other things nowadays that are similar {and sometimes identical} to what the rage was way back when (I'm talking the '40s, '50s & '60s). The little collages are just a few examples of how much fashion has stayed very much the same and how classics will always be classic. My favourite is the swimsuit comparison. How did you guess?

Liz Taylor's gorgeous ball gown vs. modern day collections. Very similar neckline style and printed chiffon.
Marilyn Monroe's cat-eye glasses vs. an editorial with a main feature of red cat-eye glasses.

It's so fascinating the way fashion has evolved, and this is a considerably recent evolution! Think about the Renaissance and Victorian eras.... goodness!

its funny when you realize that fashion evolves, but evolves on some basis and past still inspires some of the biggest designers. stunning!

I love this post! You always see "vintage-inspired", but it's nice to actually see the comparison. You're right, some classic shapes will never go out of style, and I'm glad for that!

This is such a clever post! Because designers always reference stuff but to actually see the images side by side is really interesting. What a wonderful blog you have here. Followed for sure.

I feel like fashion is always repeting itself but always adding new items and concepts! Now we see a lot of 40s, 50s and 60s style outfits but the truth is that they don't look exactly the same as the ones wore back in time. They're always a bit more exciting, new inspirations are added that come from films, music, art, culture in general! That's what I love about fashion. We can wear those things we saw in other person or in other era, but we will always change it somehow!

I love seeing how timeless, classic styles endure throughout the years. Even styles from the Victorian era still have people being inspired by them...buttoned ankle boots, high, ruffled collars, accentuating waist lines...
I wish clothing wasn't so disposable to the majority of people. I wish people would really embrace both modern and "vintage" styles as much as they do the trends.
Anyway, lovely then-and-nows, Maria! Your blog never ceases to inspire me. ♥
